The function of linear cylinder

Linear cylinders are suitable for providing straight in or out linear motion for a variety of applications. Available in single-acting (spring-extension or spring-return actuator) and double-acting types, with single or double-lever configurations, non-rotating and precision non-rotating models. It is a cylindrical metal part that guides the piston to perform linear reciprocating motion. The working fluid converts thermal energy into mechanical energy through expansion in the engine cylinder;the gas is compressed by the piston in the compressor cylinder to increase the pressure.

Linear cylinder Equipment is used in industrial automation and machinery, machine tools, and computer peripherals equipment, home automation, packaging, assembly, electronics manufacturing, data storage, laser processing, and testing and inspection. Linear actuators are used throughout industrial sectors, including factory automation, transportation, packaging, life sciences, and more. Linear cylinder devices are also used in medical imaging and solar, agricultural, construction, automotive and robotics applications.

Linear cylinder devices that use standard motors typically use the motor as a separate cylinder attached to the side of the actuator, either parallel to the cylinder or extending out of the side, positioned perpendicular to the actuator. Sometimes the motor is attached to the rear end of the cylinder. The drive motor has a typical construction with a solid drive shaft that engages the drive nut or drive screw of the linear cylinder.

▋ Working principle of linear cylinder

How does the linear motion of a linear cylinder work? There are several basic parameters that must be considered before choosing a linear motion solution: load (and how much force is required to move it), total stroke (end point in each direction), speed of operation, accuracy.

CylinderLinear action usually requires a slide, often with guide rails, to support the mechanism with sufficient strength and low friction during operation. The linear motion selection is how this slider is driven. Servo motors, arranged with a gearbox and accompanying screw drive or rack and pinion as required, provide superior control of acceleration, speed, deceleration, positioning and accuracy at any position of travel.

For linear motion, where space is at a premium, especially for long stroke lengths, it is often possible to use a rodless cylinder instead of a traditional rod cylinder, especially if the mechanism will be connected onto the bracket. Regardless, the upfront and maintenance costs of a rodless cylinder will be much lower than a design using a motor-driven linear mechanism.
