The working chamber of this rotating cylinder is composed of a pair of gears. Compressed air is input from the center of symmetry, and the gears rotate under the action of pressure. The rotary cylinder using spur gears can rotate forward and reverse, but the rotary cylinder using herringbone gears or helical gears cannot rotate reversely.

If a spur gear rotating cylinder is used, the supplied compressed air will not expand when passing through the gear, so the efficiency is low. When using herringbone gears or helical gears, the compressed air expands by 60% to 70%, improving efficiency.

In the gear-type rotating cylinder, compressed air acts on the tooth flanks of the two gears. Among the gears, one is fixed on the working shaft, and the other is meshed with it. The force to rotate it is the product of the pressure and the tooth side area.
